Althusser needs the opposition between the “simplicity” of nature and the “complexity” of history: production is the business of workers, whereas history is too complex an affair for them, one they must entrust to the care of specialists from the Party and from Theory. The masses produce – and so they must, otherwise we scholars would have to do it. In that predicament, how could we defend “our right and duty to know.” … The masses should wait for the “theses” that specialists in Marxism work out for their benefit.
